The Arab Spring began in Tunisia on December 18, 2010 after the self-immolation of Mohamed Bouazizi, a street vendor who set himself on fire in protest of the confiscation of his wares and the humiliation that a municipal official inflicted on him.

Nine months later and after overthrowing Tunisia's President, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, the country went to the polls on October 23, 2011, in the country first ever free elections.
